One of the greatest pleasures as Chairman is seeing James Douglas Limited and the talented people I have known and worked with for many years continuing to thrive following my decision to step back from day-to-day leadership.
When we transitioned JDL to an Employee Ownership Trust, my ambition wasn’t simply to sell the business. It was to create a platform where the business, its people and its customers could prosper for the long term.
Eighteen months on, I’m delighted that the results are demonstrating just what can be achieved through employee ownership. Under the leadership of Managing Director Lindsey Elder and the management team, JDL has delivered strong, profitable growth while remaining true to the values that have always defined the company.
For anyone considering an EOT succession, one lesson stands out above all others: the legal transaction is only the beginning. The real challenge and ultimately the greatest opportunity lies in the relationship that follows.
A close, trusting and supportive relationship between the outgoing shareholder, the Board and the executive leadership team has been fundamental to making this transition work so smoothly. Respecting each other’s roles, sharing experience when it adds value, and giving the management team the freedom to lead has created an environment in which the business can continue to flourish.
We’re still discovering the full benefits that employee ownership can bring to outgoing shareholders, employees and customers. I continue to be actively involved in long-term business developments and building new strategic partnerships. After eighteen months the future looks extremely encouraging and I remain as excited and committed to the future of James Douglas Limited as ever.
