Every year on 20th June, businesses across the UK celebrate Employee Ownership Trust (EOT) Day—a time to recognise the value of employee ownership and what it means to work for a company where everyone has a stake. At James Douglas, we’re proud to be part of the employee-owned movement, having made the transition in December 2024. This EOT Day is our first official celebration, and we’re excited to reflect on what this new chapter means for our team and our future.
What Is an EOT?
An Employee Ownership Trust is a model where the majority of a company’s shares are held in trust on behalf of its employees. It ensures the business is run for the benefit of the people who help build it – its team.
At James Douglas, this means every member of staff now has a real stake in the company’s future. We all succeed together.
Why We Became an Employee-Owned Company
In December 2024, the decision to become an EOT marked a defining moment for James Douglas. Rather than selling externally, Mike Hawkes, who had owned the business for nearly 20 years, chose to protect the company’s values, independence, and long-term future by placing it in the hands of the people who know it best—its employees.
It was a natural step in our evolution and one that reflects our commitment to fairness, sustainability, and people-first leadership.
How We’re Celebrating EOT Day
To mark our very first EOT Day, we’ll be bringing the team together for a celebratory afternoon teawith a chance to connect, reflect, and enjoy what we’ve achieved together so far.
We’re also using the opportunity to reflect on our values and invite input on how we continue building an open, empowered culture.
